Color Edge Detection by Photometric Quasi-Invariants

چکیده
Photometric invariance is used in many computer vision applications. The advantage of photometric invariance is the robustness against shadows, shading, and illumination conditions. However, the drawbacks of photometric invariance is the loss of discriminative power and the inherent instabilities caused by the non-linear transformations to compute the invariants. In this paper, we propose a new class of derivatives which we refer to as photometric quasi-invariants. These quasi-invariants share with full invariants the nice property that they are robust against photometric edges, such as shadows or specular edges. Further, these quasi-invariants do not have the inherent instabilities of full photometric invariants. We will apply these quasi-invariant derivatives in the context of photometric invariant edge detection and classification. Experiments show that the quasi-invariant derivatives are stable and they significantly outperform the full invariant derivatives in discriminative power.

Automatic extraction of local features from images plays an important role in many computer vision tasks. During the last years, much focus has been put on making the features invariant to geometric transformations such as a rotation and scaling of the image. Recently, some work has been published concerning the integration of color information into the detection and description step of SIFT. I...
متن کاملColor Invariant Edge Detection
Segmentation based on color, instead of intensity only, provides an easier distinction between materials, on the condition that robustness against irrelevant parameters is achieved, such as illumination source, shadows, geometry and camera sensitivities. Modeling the physical process of the image formation provides insight into the effect of different parameters on object color. In this paper, ...
متن کاملComparing Intensity Transformations and Their Invariants in the Context of Color Pattern Recognition
In this paper we compare different ways of representing the photometric changes in image intensities caused by changes in illumination and viewpoint, aiming at a balance between goodness-of-fit and low complexity. We derive invariant features based on generalized color moment invariants – that can deal with geometric and photometric changes of a planar pattern – corresponding to the chosen phot...
